d-bag gets upset, makes video because he got fired for being a homophobic bigot.
I’ve been sitting on this video for a couple days now, because there’s so much to unpack. This nice young Christian fellow pulled aside a manager, who had been talking about her (female) fiancée, and told her that according to God she was a sinner and would she kindly stop talking about her morally repulsive floral arrangements and heathen menu planning in the workplace. Through some undisclosed chain of events, he eventually gets canned.
Nice young Christian fellow is distraught! because he only expressed his belief, in opposition to the manger’s belief. Of course, her belief seems to be that her fiancee exists. Pretty indisputable, and perhaps less a “belief” than a “fact.”
I do see how to the untrained eye, this can look like one of the sticky spots in free speech. But it isn’t. He has the right to express his bigoted opinions. And his employer has the right to consider those opinion discriminatory, as they address innates trait of its manager, and the totally legal facts of her life. She didn’t “shove anything in his face,” she didn’t coerce him to sin, she just talked about her upcoming wedding the way any old person might. And this dude took the time out of his day to tell her she’s going to hell.
I say: well done, Brooks Brothers. Hate speech should not be protected speech, and if our government doesn’t want to write it that way at least employers can pick up the slack.
I can’t decide if the best (by which of course I mean most appalling) part of this is “she used that pronoun, she, so she was saying in other words she had a fiance who was a woman” or “so-called, uh, female fiance.” Of course, ‘homosexuality is “bad stuff”’ is another gem. The ice cream truck music in the background at 1:46 and onward really underscores what a clown this guy is.
